The Lycian Way The Pirates Bay Trek
A 8-Day Immersive Journey through Antiquity and Nature
Day 1: Arrival in Antalya – Gateway to the Turquoise Coast
Your journey begins at Antalya Airport, where you will be met for a private transfer to your hotel. In the evening, we will gather for a welcome meeting to discuss the week’s trekking logistics and safety protocols. This is your first introduction to the hospitality of the region, setting the stage for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: The Göynük Ascent – Pine Forests and River Pools
Stats: 17 km | 6 hours | Elevation: +1000m / -400m
The Trek: After a brief transfer, we reach the entrance of the Göynük Canyon. We begin with a challenging but rewarding climb up the left slopes of the canyon, weaving through aromatic pine-covered hills.
The Moment: Mid-journey, the trail leads us down to a stunning natural pool formed by the river. It is an ideal spot for an outdoor lunch and a refreshing swim. We then continue our climb to reach the Göynük Plateau (Yayla), where we reunite with our vehicle for the transfer to our hotel.
Day 3: Roman Ruins and Village Traditions – The Impact Experience
Stats: 16 km | 5 hours | Elevation: +460m / -525m
The Trek: We resume from yesterday’s finish point, trekking toward Gedelme. Following lunch at a local lodge, we explore the ruins of a Roman-era castle, a silent witness to the empire’s frontier defenses.
Authentic Stay: The day concludes with a walk to a traditional village house in Yayla Kuzdere. This is a true “Impact Tourism” moment—an authentic stay in a shared-room setting where you will experience local life firsthand, complete with home-cooked meals and traditional blankets. It is a humble, heart-filled connection to the Anatolian countryside.
Day 4: The Shadow of Mount Olympos and Lebanon Cedars
Stats: 15 km | 6 hours | Elevation: +990m / -1130m
The Landscape: Our path ascends further toward the majestic skirts of Mount Tahtalı (ancient Mount Olympos). We trek along a dry riverbed before entering a surreal landscape of endemic Lebanon Cedar trees. These ancient, fairytale-like trees are a hallmark of the high Lycian altitudes.
The Descent: After lunch at Çukuryayla, we cross the ridge and descend the opposite face of the mountain to Beycik village. A final transfer brings us to the coast of Çıralı, our base for the next two nights.
Day 5: The Pirate Kingdom of Olympos and the Eternal Fires
The History: Today is dedicated to the legends of the sea. We explore the ruins of Olympos (Korykos), a city that was famously governed by pirates for nearly 150 years. The pirate leader Zeniketes once ruled here until his defeat by the Romans in 77 BC. You will see the overgrown sarcophagi and ancient harbor walls that once protected their fleet.
The Myth: After an afternoon of relaxation on the beach, we embark on a magical night hike to Chimaera (Yanartaş). Here, natural gas vents have fueled “eternal fires” for thousands of years. According to legend, this is the breath of the monster Chimaera, slain by the hero Bellerophon atop the winged horse Pegasus. Seeing these flames flicker in the darkness is a profound, mystical experience.
Day 6: Over Mount Musa to the Bay of Adrasan
Stats: 16 km | 6 hours | Elevation: +750m / -750m
The Trek: We climb Mount Musa (Moses Mountain), reaching an elevation of 650 meters. The trail leads us through vibrant groves of strawberry trees (sandal ağaçları) to a secluded, abandoned shepherd’s hut—a perfect, quiet spot for lunch. The afternoon features a scenic descent into the fertile valley and bay of Adrasan.
Day 7: The Icon of the Coast – Cape Gelidonya
Stats: 18 km | 7 hours | Elevation: +700m / -700m
The High Point: This is perhaps the most iconic day on the entire Lycian Way. We trek parallel to the sea through pine-scented ridges, with constant, breathtaking views of the “Beş Adalar” (Five Islands).
The Lighthouse: We reach the Gelidonya Lighthouse, perched high above the jagged cliffs. This area is historically significant as the site of the world’s first scientific underwater excavation of a Bronze Age shipwreck. The lighthouse itself, a symbol of safety in these treacherous waters, offers one of the most photographed views in Turkey. A final hour of walking brings us to our vehicle for the transfer to our hotel.
Day 8: Departure – Carrying the Memories Home
Our journey through the Pirate’s Bay concludes. After a final Mediterranean breakfast, we provide a private transfer to Antalya Airport for your return flight. You leave behind the trails of the Lycian Way, but you carry with you the stories of pirates, cedar forests, and the eternal flames of Anatolia.
