Northern Anatolia (Black Sea Coast, Trabzon, Sinop)
A City You Can Taste
A lush, densely forested, and mountainous region that was historically difficult to conquer
and easily isolated.
- Early/Prehistoric (Pre-3000 BC):
- Kaskians: Fierce, semi-nomadic tribal people who constantly raided the Hittite Empire and never fully submitted to central rule.
- BC (3000 BC – 1 BC):
- Milesian Colonists: Greek sailors who established the first major trading ports like Sinope (Sinop) and Trapezus (Trabzon).
- Kingdom of Pontus: A powerful Hellenistic state (most famous under Mithridates the Great) that fiercely resisted the Roman Republic.
- CE / After BC (1 CE – 1300 CE):
- Empire of Trebizond: A Byzantine successor state that outlasted Constantinople itself, flourishing as a major trade hub on the Silk Road until 1461.
